What you can do to help your flood insurance claim go smoothly

If you have been affected by a flood, here are some simple actions you can take to help ensure your insurance claim is settled as promptly and smoothly as possible.

  • Take photos and videos of the flooding
  • Mark the height of the flood water on the walls in each room.
  • Don't throw away anything that has been damaged until your insurer confirms it is ok to do so. The one exception to this is food –in which case, make a list of everything that has been damaged, if your insurance Policy covers perishable items. Again, a photo will be helpful, although not essential.
  • Keep a record of all communication between you and your insurance company - dates and times of phone calls and the name of who you spoke to, copies of letters, emails and faxes and receipts for anything you've had to pay out for.
